Write down the business facts.

Describe what the business will sell, who owns it, where it will operate, and whether people will be hired. Identify any structure or registration decisions already made and bring the supporting documents.

A business structure is not selected by an accounting checklist alone. The IRS provides a starting point for federal tax topics; legal, state, and local requirements may need separate review. Note the question instead of treating a generic example as a recommendation for your business.

Map the records from the first transaction.

List the accounts and payment systems the business expects to use. Decide where invoices, receipts, statements, and agreements will be stored and who will keep them organized. Choose a process you can repeat during a busy month.

  • How will customers be billed and how will payment be received?
  • Who will record purchases and retain the supporting documents?
  • Which systems will handle bookkeeping, payroll, or payments?
  • How will owner-funded costs and other owner transactions be identified?

Agree on the first review, not just the software.

Set a point to review the initial records after activity begins. The conversation should test whether accounts are being reconciled, questions are being resolved, and reports are useful to the owner.

Identify who is responsible for registrations and filings, including work handled by other providers. Keep an issue list as the business changes. A new location, additional owner, new activity, or first hire may require another review rather than relying on the original setup.
