What to review

Define the backlog before rebuilding the routine.

Cleanup addresses a specific period of incomplete or unreliable books. Start with the last reconciled month, not simply the last transaction entered. Catch-up work is separate from maintaining current records.

Tell us the accounting system, accounts, missing records, and deadline. These establish what to review before agreeing the work, price, and schedule.

Work to discuss

  • Catch-up periods and missing statements
  • Bank, card, and payment-account reconciliation
  • Unclear balances, duplicate entries, and open questions
  • A documented handoff to recurring bookkeeping

Good fit when

When this work helps

  • Several months have accumulated without a complete reconciliation.
  • The bank balance and the accounting records do not agree.
  • Transactions were imported, but duplicate or unclear entries remain.
  • A tax-preparation handoff or a change of accountants requires a clearer starting point.

What to confirm

Know what is included before work begins.

  • The accounts and periods included, and the records needed for each.
  • How missing information and uncertain transactions will be resolved.
  • The reports and reconciliation status to review at completion.
  • Which ongoing bookkeeping, tax returns, or other tasks are separate.

The backlog, account count, transaction volume, and availability of complete statements affect the work and price. Review those inputs before agreeing a cleanup schedule.

Corrections should be traceable to records and resolved questions. Once the cleanup is reviewed, agree the first recurring period and responsibilities separately, using the documented balances.

Common questions

Bookkeeping cleanup questions and next steps.

Straight answers to what owners ask before the first conversation about bookkeeping cleanup.

Do I need every document before contacting you?

No. Start with the accounting system, the period involved, the last reconciled month, and your deadline. Note what is missing. Ask how to share sensitive records before sending them.

Is cleanup included in monthly bookkeeping?

Cleanup and recurring bookkeeping are scoped separately. The catch-up period may require different records and work than maintaining a current monthly routine.

How long will cleanup take?

The schedule depends on the backlog, the condition of the records, and how quickly missing information can be resolved. Timing is agreed after the work is reviewed; sending an inquiry does not reserve a completion date.

Does cleanup include filing a tax return?

Not automatically. Tax preparation, amendments, notices, and ongoing bookkeeping need to be identified separately in the agreed scope.
