Write down the accounting problem, filing deadline, report, or decision that needs attention first. 3. Note the accounting, payroll, point-of-sale, merchant, inventory, and spreadsheet systems in use. 4. Identify the last month or reporting period that is complete and reconciled. 5. List the bank, credit-card, payment, payroll, loan, and other financial accounts involved. 6. Note any missing statements, unresolved transactions, prior-year issues, notices, or known errors. 7. Identify whether the priority is bookkeeping cleanup, recurring bookkeeping, tax preparation, financial reporting, cash flow, or a business decision. 8. Ask which records and periods are included, who performs and reviews the work, what the deliverable is, and what determines the fee. 9. Confirm the expected timeline, next review date, client responsibilities, exclusions, and work priced separately. 10. Gather recent statements, the prior-year return, and any notices.
